Ten years after becoming paraplegic following of a terrible and inexplicable armed assault, Andrea Stella takes up a new exciting project: “I diritti solcano l’oceano”, a transatlantic adventure setting sail from La Spezia (Italy) to Miami.

That is where, in 2000, Andrea Stella was assaulted and shot by criminals who were attempting to steal his rented car. Undeterred by the accident in which he lost the use of his legs, Andrea is now using his sailing skills on board a specially equipped catamaran, “lo Spirito di Stella”, the first wheelchair accessible catamaran in the world, and he sails to defend the rights of the disabled worldwide.

On the sails are printed the “United Nations Convention on rights of persons with disabilities” and the “Manifesto for the Promotion of Accessible Tourism”.

The aim of the project, that promotes a environmental sustainability research, is to spread a strong message of equality.
